Why All Moralities Are Not Equal, Redux
Today brings the news that Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania has just switched from a Republican to a Democrat. He said that his former party has simply moved away from the center, leaving him more closely aligned with the Democrats. Hmmm. Perhaps this will please not only the Dems but the Republican base, as well. After all, they are the champions of the morality of "purity". Doesn't the departure of a member who did not hew to a strict conservative line leave their party more pure than it was yesterday? Sounds like a win-win to me.

Regarding Specter's defection, it's hard for me to like Specter. He seems to be only interested in doing whatever is necessary to stay in a position of power. I wish he would admit that it wasn't only the Republicans who have gone astray, but also himself in playing ball with them through the Bush years.
On the other hand, I feel that Biden and Obama were right in welcoming him to the Democratic party. The Democrats are the big tent party, and that's okay with me. Specter may not be the ideal Democrat, but the Democratic party welcomes centrists and therefore rules the country at the present time. Obama's vision is to be the president of ALL the people.
I don't think of this as a win-win. Perhaps a small step in the right direction for Specter and the Democrats, and another defeat for the Republicans...
